Is a third dose needed for the COVID-19 vaccine?

At this time, there are no recommendations for the general public to get a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Canada. The Government of Ontario recommends that a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine be offered to select vulnerable populations that face the highest risk of serious illness from the virus, including those who are severely immunocompromised and vulnerable elderly living in high-risk congregate settings. A third dose will help provide an improved immune response for these high-risk individuals and will add an extra layer of protection. Learn more about third doses and who is eligible on the COVID-19 Vaccine FAQ page (see question #7, under the heading: Administration and side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine).
