What is the Delta variant of concern (VOC) and does the COVID-19 vaccine protect against it?

The Delta VOC (Government of Canada) is one of four VOC mutations of the COVID-19 virus detected to date. The Delta VOC is more transmissible with a greater risk of disease severity as compared with the Alpha variant (first detected in the United Kingdom). The Delta variant is spreading throughout Ontario.

It is more important than ever to get fully vaccinated with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you are eligible. Completing the COVID-19 vaccine series with two doses boosts immune response and improves vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 and the Delta variant. Studies show that while one dose can protect against hospitalization, two doses are required for good protection against getting sick with the Delta variant. Visit the Vaccination clinics for COVID-19 web page for booking information.

In addition, The National Advisory Committee on Immunization ( Government of Ontario) has confirmed that the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) are interchangeable. This means you can safely get either mRNA product to complete your vaccine series with a high level of effectiveness, regardless of which mRNA vaccine you got for your first dose. Either option for your second dose is safe, provides strong protection against COVID-19 and the Delta variant, and will complete your COVID-19 vaccine series.
