Public Health Sudbury & Districts reports third COVID-19 death

Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Medical Officer of Health with Public Health Sudbury & Districts, is reporting the third death related to COVID-19 in our service area. This death is in relation to the outbreak declared at Amberwood Suites retirement home in Greater Sudbury. The Amberwood Suites resident passed away in hospital. Out of respect during this difficult time, no further details will be provided.

“On behalf of Public Health, we offer our sincere condolences to family members, friends, and caregivers affected by this loss. We understand this news is difficult for all to hear, including for those who have loved ones living in retirement homes or long-term care,” said Dr. Sutcliffe. “This somber event reminds our community of the importance of protecting our most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic and is a stark reminder of the seriousness to take action to protect others. As vaccine begins to arrive locally, the phased rollout will ensure those who need it most will be at the front of the line to receive it.”

Public Health declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Amberwood Suites retirement home following the report of a case of COVID-19 in a resident on January 5, 2021. To date, there have been 35 cases of COVID-19 associated with this outbreak amongst 32 residents and 3 staff members at the retirement home. Public Health continues to work closely with the retirement home to protect residents and staff.

The protection of our most vulnerable populations is of the utmost importance. Everyone is urged to continue following public health measures to protect others and stop the spread of COVID-19. On January 12, 2021, a province-wide state of emergency was declared to protect Ontarians from COVID-19. A stay-at-home order was also announced and is currently in effect for all Ontarians. Enhanced public health and workplace safety measures are in effect as part of the Provincewide Shutdown.

Updates about COVID-19 testing, confirmed cases, and outbreaks in Greater Sudbury, the District of Sudbury, and the District of Manitoulin are posted online.
