1. Introduction

The Sudbury & District Health Unit’s Chapleau office (Appendix) is located approximately 400 km northwest of the City of Greater Sudbury and 200 km west of Timmins. This office services approximately 2,503 people residing in approximately 157 square kilometres in the town of Chapleau and five First Nation reserves1 (Table 2.1).2

This Demographic Profile reflects information from the mandatory 2011 Census (formerly known as the Short Form Questionnaire) conducted by Statistics Canada. The Census is conducted every five years to provide a snapshot of Canada’s population. This report provides a profile of the population serviced by the Sudbury & District Health Unit’s (SDHU) district office in Chapleau.

The information presented here is reported at one or more of the following geographic levels, according to census boundaries:

1 Provincial public health services are not mandated on First Nation reserves unless subject to agreements between multiple jurisdictions. However, First Nations peoples are not restricted from using services of the Sudbury & District Health Unit.

2 The office also services a part of the Sudbury, Unorganized, North Part Census Subdivision, which consists of an area spanning approximately 35,595 square kilometres with a population of only 2,306. However, that part of Sudbury Unorganized, North Part immediately surrounding Chapleau is very sparsely populated and is impracticable to include in this profile. A separate profile of Sudbury, Unorganized, North Part is available.

2.  Population

This section focuses on the geographic extent of the Chapleau area and the population distribution within that area. It also represents changes in the population age structure and size from 2006–2011.
