1. Introduction
The Sudbury & District Health Unit’s Manitoulin office (Appendix) is located in the heart of Manitoulin Island in the town of Mindemoya, approximately 160 km from the City of Greater Sudbury. This office services approximately 13,048 people residing on the island covering 3,107 square kilometres.1
This Demographic Profile reflects information from the mandatory 2011 Census (formerly known as the Short Form Questionnaire) conducted by Statistics Canada. The Census is conducted every five years to provide a snapshot of Canada’s population. This report provides a profile of the population serviced by the Sudbury & District Health Unit’s (SDHU) district office on Manitoulin Island.
The information presented here is reported at one or more of the following geographic levels, according to census boundaries:
- Provincial Level: Ontario
- Health Unit Level: Sudbury & District Health Unit
- The Sudbury & District Health Unit is made up of three Census Divisions: Sudbury District, Greater Sudbury, and Manitoulin.
- Census Subdivision The Manitoulin area comprises four types of Census Subdivisions, including Towns (T), Townships (TP), Municipalities (M), and Indian Reserves (IRI).

2. Population
This section focuses on the geographic extent of the Manitoulin area and the population distribution within that area. It also represents changes in the population age structure and size from 2006–2011.

Highlights
- The Manitoulin area saw an increase in population of 3.3% between 2006 and 2011, while the SDHU area saw an increase in population of 1%.
- Manitoulin area comprises approximately 7% of the SDHU land area and 7% of its population.

Highlights
- The overall distribution of the population in the Manitoulin area follows a similar pattern to the SDHU area, with the notable exception of those aged 20–44 (lower) and 60–74 (higher) than the SDHU area.
- The senior population (65+) in the Manitoulin area (21%) is higher than the senior population in the SDHU area (17%) and Ontario (15%).
- There are 78 dependents for every 100 working-aged persons in the Manitoulin area, which is higher than both the SDHU area (63 per 100), and Ontario (62 per 100).[2]

Highlights
Between 2006–2011:
- In 2006, the population aged 0 to 19 years was 3,110 and in 2011 the population was 2,920, therefore, the population age group decreased by 6% from 2006 to 2011.
- The population aged 20 to 44 years decreased by 6%.
- The population aged 45 to 64 years decreased by 7%.
- The population aged 65+ years decreased by 4%.
2 Dependency Ratio: The total demographic dependency ratio is the ratio of the combined youth population (0 to 19) and senior population (65 or older) to the working-age population (20 to 64 years). It is expressed as the number of “dependents” for every 100 “workers” (Statistics Canada, 2011).

Highlights
- Just under half (47%) of the Manitoulin area population aged 15+ reported being legally married in 2011, which follows a similar pattern to the SDHU area (48%) and Ontario (50%).
- A higher proportion of the Ontario population reported their marital status as single (28%), compared to the Manitoulin area (25%) and the SDHU area (25%).

Highlights
- Two-person households comprised the largest proportion (41%) of private households in the Manitoulin area. A similar pattern was found for the SDHU area (38%), whereas the province saw a lower proportion of two-person households (32%).
