1. Introduction
The Sudbury & District Health Unit’s Sudbury East office (Appendix) is located in St. Charles, approximately 60 km from the City of Greater Sudbury. This office services approximately 6,526 people residing in approximately 3,225 square kilometres.1
This Demographic Profile reflects information from the mandatory 2011 Census (formerly known as the Short Form Questionnaire) conducted by Statistics Canada. The Census is conducted every five years to provide a snapshot of Canada’s population. This report provides a profile of the population served by the Sudbury & District Health Unit’s (SDHU) district office in Sudbury East.
The information presented here is reported at one or more of the following geographic levels, according to census boundaries:
- Provincial Level: Ontario
- Health Unit Level: Sudbury & District Health Unit
- The Sudbury & District Health Unit is made up of three Census Divisions: Sudbury District, Greater Sudbury, and Manitoulin.
- Census Subdivision Level: The Sudbury East area comprises two types of Census Subdivisions including Towns (T) and Municipalities (M).

2. Population
This section focuses on the geographic extent of the Sudbury East area and the population distribution within that area. It also represents changes in the population age structure and size from 2006–2011.

Highlights
- The Sudbury East area saw a 3% decrease in population between 2006 and 2011, while the SDHU area saw a 1% increase in population. Sudbury East comprises approximately 7% of the SDHU land area and 3% of its population.

Highlights
- The population pyramid for the Sudbury East area illustrates the impact of baby boomers (45 to 64 years), forming approximately 40% of the population.
- There is a higher proportion of the population aged 50–74 and lower proportion under aged 40 in the Sudbury East area compared to the SDHU area.
- The population aged 65+ is higher (20%) in the Sudbury East area compared to the SDHU area (17%) and the province (15%).
- There are 59 dependents for every 100 working-aged persons in the Sudbury East area, which is lower than both the SDHU area (63 per 100) and Ontario (62 per 100).2

Highlights
Between 2006–2011:
- In 2006, the population aged 0 to 19 years was 1,355 and in 2011 the population was 1,155, therefore, this population age group decreased by 15% between 2006–2011.
- The population aged 20 to 44 years decreased by 13%.
- The population aged 45 to 64 years increased by 5%.
- The population aged 65+ years increased by 10%.

Highlights
- In the Sudbury East area, 40% of the population reported their mother tongue as French, which is higher than both the SDHU area (25%) and Ontario (4%).

Highlights

Highlights
- In Sudbury East area, a lower proportion (9%) of families were led by a single parent compared to the SDHU area (17%). A similar distribution was observed in Ontario (9%).

Highlights
- In the Sudbury East area, 13% of the population of children living at home were aged 25 years or older. A similar pattern was observed for Ontario (11%).
- A lower proportion of the population in the SDHU area aged 25 years or older reported living at home (11%), compared to the Sudbury East area (13%).
