Position summary:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Dental Hygienist in the Seniors Oral Health Program will plan, develop, implement and review assigned programs including the provision of oral health services for older adults which includes the support for dental treatment and function of the Seniors Dental clinic as outlined in the Ontario Public Health Standards, the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program Schedule of Services and in accordance with agency policy.

Responsibilities:

• Assists with the division’s student placement program and acts as a preceptor for assigned students.
• Acts as a resource person to the organization and the community.
• Performs dental hygiene assessments in line with the dental hygiene process of care and refers clients to dental providers as appropriate. This may include the collection of surveillance data utilizing the OHISS or another approved data collection program.
• Provides a range of dental hygiene treatment as per client needs and consent. This may include but is not limited to: scaling, prophylaxis, fluoride application, , Interim stabilization therapy and oral hygiene instruction and will be provided in accordance with the Dental Hygiene process of care and the Ontario Public Health Standards.
• Performs tasks to support the function of the dental clinic which may include but is not limited to: sterilization of instruments/equipment, taking of radiographs, taking of impressions, scheduling and confirming client appointment, ordering of supplies, enrollment of clients into Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program.
• Assists in dental health, nutrition education and oral hygiene instruction programs.
• Supports clients with enrollment and access to care.
• Maintains College of Dental Hygiene Standards of Practice.
• Ensures that proper consents and documentation are maintained according to health unit and College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario documentation standards.
• Reviews presentations and health promotion materials to ensure accuracy of clinical information.
• Identifies supplies, equipment and resources necessary to carry out programs.
• Contributes to the development of program plans and develops, plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates assigned projects in consultation with the manager and other team members as required.
• Participates in the orientation of staff, students, volunteers and others as may be required for the position.
• Provides input into the budget process upon request.

Requirements:

• Minimum of two years of recent clinical experience with scaling, root planning and treatment planning for adults and/or seniors is required.
• Experience in community development is an asset.
• Experience in public health is an asset.
• Training in gerontology is considered an asset.
• Graduate of dental hygiene program at a recognized/accredited college or university.
• Must be a Registered Dental Hygienist with the College of Dental Hygienist of Ontario and in good standing.
• A self-initiating designation from the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario is preferred.
• Current Emergency First Aid and CPR-HCP certification.
• Maintains and demonstrates professional competence as a Registered Dental Hygienist and accepts responsibility for professional standards as set out by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario and relevant legislation.
• Willingness to occasionally work irregular hours.
• Willingness to potentially travel out of town.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a member of a team.
• Maintains current Ontario driver’s license and has access to a reliable vehicle with agency required insurance to fulfill position requirements.
• Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is required.
• Advanced oral and written proficiency in French is an asset.
• Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).
