Salary: $95,186.00 – $108,781.40 annually

Position summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Information Technology, the IT Systems Specialist – Applications & Server Infrastructure role is responsible for the design and support of the IT applications and server infrastructure including the implementation, maintenance and on-going patching of the infrastructure, maintaining operating procedures, and ensuring the alignment of the infrastructure and applications with business needs. The incumbent will also act as a liaison and advisor between the business unit, the technology team while ensuring information systems interoperability in accordance with agency policy. This position is also responsible for backing up the Information Technology team members.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, evaluate and testing of current and future technologies, tools, procedures and processes in order to support the planning and managing of the IT applications and server infrastructure.
- Planning and configuration of systems infrastructure, both on-prem and cloud, including but not limited to Hypervisors , Storage Area Networks, Backup Systems, Windows Servers, SQL Server, SharePoint 2013, M365 services such as SharePoint Online and Exchange Online, Linux Servers, and Web Servers.
- Collaborate and effectively communicate with teams/divisions to establish project plans and requirements for process improvement through technical and application systems and infrastructure enhancements.
- Comprehensive knowledge of existing business applications, systems and processes, their relationship to each other and possible interfaces.
- Identify required upgrades for software, applications, database, and server infrastructure. Knowledge of software applications and hardware based on user/operational/Ministry requirements. (Requires high level application access to confidential information).
- Establish relationships with application software and hardware vendors and their support teams. Diagnose problems and recommend corrective action. Report software and hardware failures to the appropriate vendor and record issues and problems. Consult with vendor support to request technical solutions to specific user needs.
- Develops and implements change management, configuration management, problem management, data backups, security management and service monitoring procedures related to the IT infrastructure as well as the application and software environment.
- Communicate software, application and systems problematic issues to key stakeholders and management.
- Gather and analyze server infrastructure (computer & storage) and security requirements of assigned projects, assist in developing a secure design and transferring knowledge to the super-users within each area.
- Assist in creating and updating documentation for supporting systems including IT policies and procedures including maintenance, server and software configurations.
- Provide support to the Manager IT to oversee and implement direction for all information services, applications, communications and computing services.
- Provide escalated level support as required to staff and assist members of IT with solving complex network and application-related problems or where additional resources are required.
- Performs administrative and other duties to support the function.
- Provides input into the budget process upon request.
- Working with IT Systems Specialist – Security & Network Infrastructure, provide recommendations for developing, establishing and testing disaster recovery criteria for the restoration of enterprise applications and the server environment and implement as approved.
- Provides back-up to, primarily, IT Systems Specialist – Security & Network Infrastructure and other members of the Information Technology team and provides support to the Manager Information Technology to oversee and implement direction for all IT infrastructure.
- Assists in testing recovery from off-site server room.
- Administers application security access including creating security groups, user rights, and performing thorough security and audits as required.
- In collaboration with IT Systems Specialist – Security & Network Infrastructure, perform trend analysis for software and systems to improve or leverage these systems.
- Report generation and creation for third party applications and software as required.
- Assists in developing long terms strategies and capacity planning for meeting future hardware and software technology needs.
- Participates in the orientation of staff, students, volunteers and others as may be required for the position.
- Provide mentoring and support to other members of the IT team.
- Provides technical advice and consultation for software and hardware.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Assist with the planning and management of the IT Security and Network infrastructure.
- Familiarize with the existing security and network infrastructure to support the IT Systems Specialist – Security & Network Infrastructure, for providing network support.
- Assist with the planning and configuration of IT network infrastructure including but not limited to VOIP phone systems, network switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points, and network monitoring.
- Assist with identifying required upgrades for security and network systems.
- Assist with planning and administering VPN and VOIP phone services to staff and clients
- Assist and provide backup to IT Systems Specialist – Security & Network Infrastructure, in creating and updating documentation for supporting systems including IT policies and procedures including maintenance, network equipment, security tools, and policies.
- Assist with monitoring and configuration of firewalls, network and other technologies for threats, vulnerabilities and unauthorized access (requires monitoring other staff and what they are doing on the network).
- Assist with responding to security alerts, incidents, and perform threat assessment
Requirements:
- Minimum 3- year degree or diploma in Computer Science or related discipline.
- Suggested current certifications or equivalent: MCSE, Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Database Administrator Associate, Security +, M365-related certs, and ITIL.
- Must be familiar with security best practices, ITIL framework, and security monitoring tools.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Information Technology with a minimum of 2 years supporting end-user applications and server environments including TCP/IP, ISCSI, FCoE, DNS, Storage Spaces Direct, Hyper-V, VMWare, Linux, Powershell, backup and replication software, depdupe appliances, and public cloud environments including Azure and AWS.
- Preference given to experience with Veeam B&R and Dell Datadomain dedupe appliances.
- Experience with SharePoint 2013 (or any on-premises version) is required.
- Experience with Microsoft Defender for Cloud and XDR is preferred.
- Experience with Microsoft Teams Phone is an asset.
- Advanced systems administration , database and cloud administration.
- Experience with Hyper-V and VMWare virtualization is required.
- Preference given to hands-on experience with Azure Stack.
- Experience with Azure Iaas and PaaS services is required.
- Experience with multiple cloud providers such as AWS and GCP is an asset.
- Experience with Network and Administration is an asset.
- Experience with change management and advanced understanding of current computer software, applications and hardware.
- Strong communication, troubleshooting and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated organizational, planning, time management and analytical skills.
- The ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and assignments.
- Ability to explore, assess and promote new methods and technologies.
- Ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated ability to function cooperatively in a multidisciplinary field.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is essential.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in French is an asset.
- Maintains current Ontario driver’s license and has access to a reliable vehicle with agency required insurance in order to fulfill position requirements on an occasional basis.
- Satisfactory police reference check in accordance with agency policy for those for whom this is required.
