Update on the Glencore smelter event

Public Health Sudbury & Districts continues to investigate the Glencore smelter event that occurred between 10 p.m. on September 23 and 5 a.m. September 24, 2025 in Falconbridge.

Public Health has received preliminary results of the composition of the dust from Glencore. At this time, test results from the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks (MECP) are pending. We are working with Public Health Ontario, MECP and Glencore to get an understanding of the potential human health impacts. Initial analysis suggests that health impacts are likely to be limited and could include minor and temporary respiratory or skin irritation if the dust is inhaled or remains on the skin. Until more is known, precautions will remain in place.

Public Health Sudbury & Districts will continue to monitor the situation closely and share updates as soon as new information is available.
