Who is eligible for PCR testing?

The PCR test is the ‘gold standard’ of testing for COVID-19 because it can successfully detect small amounts of the virus with a low chance for error. The collection method is through a nose swab.

Lab-based PCR testing for COVID-19 is available for high-risk individuals and settings. Visit ontario.ca for a full list of eligible groups.

As access to PCR testing is increasingly limited, anyone who tests positive on a rapid antigen test does not need a PCR test to confirm the results. If you test positive with a rapid antigen test you should consider yourself to have COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status. Follow the steps at ontario.ca to take care of yourself and to protect others.
