Sodium
No matter your age, eating too much sodium can have a negative impact on your health. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, which increases your risk for heart attack or stroke and kidney disease.
You can start to reduce your intake of sodium by following these simple steps:
-
- limit your intake of pre-packaged and processed foods by preparing food at home more often
- when preparing foods at home, season without adding salt
- choose foods from Canada’s Food Guide (Health Canada), which are naturally lower in sodium
- when grocery shopping, read labels and compare nutrition fact tables (Health Canada) to help you choose products that are lower in sodium
- when eating out, make lower sodium choices
