Public Health Renewal in Ontario (Motion #05-08)

Motion

WHEREAS  the provincial government has embarked on the renewal of public health in Ontario through Operation Health Protection, has made important progress in areas such as the formation of the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion and the development of public health standards and protocols, and has undertaken some initiatives to improve the training, recruitment and retention of public health professionals; and

WHEREAS on May 19, 2005 the Sudbury & District Board of Health held a public health renewal retreat on public health governance and structure as well as public health funding in order to provide input into the work of the Capacity Review Committee that culminated in the Board endorsing a summary report on June 16, 2005 to indicate their strong support for local governance, autonomous free standing boards of health and provincial‑municipal cost shared funding; and

WHEREAS numerous recommendations of the Capacity Review Committee (CRC) have yet to be implemented; and

WHEREAS  the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) commissioned A Discussion Paper on Public Health, Local Health Integration Networks, and Regional Health Authorities (2007) that supports continued renewal of Ontario’s public health system through Operation Health Protection and encourages supportive partnerships with the local health integration networks; and

WHEREAS the OPHA has shared Resolution 2007-04 with public health units to inform future discussions and decisions;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Sudbury & District Board of Health endorse the OPHA Resolution 2007-04; and

FURTHER THAT a copy of this motion be shared with Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC), Ministry of Health Promotion (MHP), Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS), the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) and the Association of Local Public Health Agencies (alPHa).
