WHEREAS volunteering has been identified as the most fundamental act of citizenship and philanthropy in our society; and

WHEREAS the Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating, 2004 identifies that 11.8 million Canadians volunteered their time to charities and other nonprofit organizations; and

WHEREAS the Sudbury & District Health Unit’s volunteer resources program, which has been supporting and enhancing public health programs and services in the Sudbury and Manitoulin Districts since 1999, has a formal philosophy statement that reads:  “The Sudbury & District Health Unit believes that volunteers make an important contribution to health unit programs and is committed to providing meaningful opportunities for volunteers to learn about public health while serving the community.” and

WHEREAS the Sudbury & District Health Unit’s 2006-2008 Strategic Plan identifies community volunteers as a means of addressing two of its priorities – intensifying partnerships and increasing connections with neighbourhoods and communities; and

WHEREAS the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement, 2001, is a document that serves as a framework to guide how volunteers are engaged and supported; and

WHEREAS Volunteer Canada urges all organizations that incorporate volunteers to adopt the Code for Volunteer Involvement;
