Nutritious Food Basket (Motion #54-10)

Approved on November 18, 2010, by the Sudbury & District Board of Health.

Motion

WHEREAS the Sudbury & District Board of Health annually monitors the cost of healthy eating in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts in accordance with the Nutritious Food Basket Protocol and the Population Health Assessment and Surveillance Protocol per the Ontario Public Health Standards, 2008; and

WHEREAS the 2010 costing results continue to show that individuals and families living on social assistance or low incomes cannot afford healthy food after paying for housing and other necessities; and

WHEREAS under motion #15-09, the Sudbury & District Board of Health outlined their support for the provincial “Put Food in the Budget” campaign and, more recently, demonstrated their commitment and participation in the local “Do the Math” challenge;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Sudbury & District Board of Health continue to call on the provincial government to review social assistance programs in order to reflect the real costs of healthy living, including nutritious food, accessible transportation and affordable housing, for all Ontarians; and

FURTHER THAT the Sudbury & District Board of Health share the Nutritious Food Basket – The Cost of Eating in the Sudbury and Manitoulin Districts 2010 report with appropriate community agencies, boards, mayors and councils throughout the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts.
